This was made for the game "King of the Hat". Since this background was likely to be the first seen by the player, I decided to start it after other backgrounds were completed so that I would have time to practice what was at the time a new art style.
The original description for Hatlandian Hills was this: "The hills have been taken over by Fat Cat, but the sun is still shining!" Industrialization may be creeping in on the original, medieval-like kingdom, but the tone of the scene is still bright and cheerful.
My main inspiration was images of construction sites, both old and new. The village takes inspiration from European Tudor-style houses.
